Travel Advisory: YYC Airport Flight Delays Phase 7

Travel Advisory: Calgary (YYC) Flight Delays and Operational Impacts – April 2024 to December 1, 2025

Suncor flights to and from Calgary are expected to experience significant operational impacts due to major runway and taxiway rehabilitation at Calgary International Airport (YYC). This construction began in April 2024 and will continue in nine phases until December 1, 2025. We are currently in Phase 7 of this project. Please review the following important information to help you plan your travel and to understand the potential for departure delays from  Firebag due to these operational impacts.

What’s Happening?

• YYC’s main West Runway (17R/35L) is closed 24/7 until December 1, 2025.
• Major taxiways and aprons are also closed or restricted, especially during peak maintenance hours (0700–1900).
• All flights are funneled to a single runway, increasing congestion and the risk of delays.
• Construction is also impacting air traffic flow control into YYC, which may result in additional delays for arriving and departing flights.
• The project is being completed in nine phases; we are currently in Phase 7.

• Phase 7: August 11 – September 28, 2025 (Current Phase)
• Phase 8: September 29 – November 2, 2025
• Phase 9: November 3 – December 1, 2025

How Will This Affect My Flight?

• Delays: Expect longer wait times for departures and arrivals, especially for flights scheduled between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
• Flow Control Delays: Due to construction, air traffic flow into YYC is further restricted, which may cause flights to be delayed at their origin or before landing.
• Longer Taxi Times: Aircraft may need to taxi longer distances due to closed taxiways, which can add to overall travel time.
• Possible Diversions: In rare cases, flights may be held on the ground or diverted to another airport if congestion is severe.
• Departure Delays from Firebag: Please be aware that flights departing from Firebag may also be affected by these operational impacts, resulting in potential delays.

What Should I Do?

• Arrive Early: Please arrive at the airport well in advance of your scheduled departure time to allow for possible delays at check-in and security.
• Be Prepared for Changes: Gate assignments out of Calgary may change on short notice. Listen for announcements and check airport monitors.
• Plan for Delays: If you have connecting flights or ground transportation, allow extra time in your travel plans.

• Most affected flights: Departing or arriving between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM, including but not limited to flights 4020, 4032, 4038, 4036, 4074, 4076, 4030, 4034, 4040, 4021, 4073, 4077, 4031.
• Flights outside this window may still experience moderate delays due to congestion and flow control.
